Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Appeal T-shirt

The Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Fundraising T-shirt

Gawakoto, Scramble and Meerkatsu have joined forces to produce this t-shirt which will raise funds in support of the relief effort currently underway in the Philippines.

It is available to purchase as a pre-order immediately here: Gawakoto
Price is £15 plus shipping.

The pre-order will run from now...all through the weekend...and end on Monday 18th November (midnight UK time).

Our tee printers are on standby and ready. All pre-ordered tees will ship in roughly two weeks after the deadline.

Some more information about the project
This t-shirt is our way to show support to the people of the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan is one of the most powerful cyclones in recent memory. It ripped through densely populated islands of the Philippines killing thousands of men, women and children and wiping out whole towns and communities. Estimates suggest over 11 million people have been affected. Watching the news right now, it is heart breaking to see the pictures. Water, food, shelter and medicine is urgently needed.

The tee costs £15GBP. A portion of that money goes towards the base cost of printing and there is also tax. All profits made per t-shirt will go towards aid relief charities working right now in the crisis hit region. In the UK, the Disasters Emergency Relief organisation is an umbrella group of many charities that are working together in the Philippines. You can of course prefer to donate directly – that way more of your money will go directly towards the fund. A list of organisations is listed here.

We felt a tee was a good platform to show universal support from the BJJ community, plus it acts as a visual means to engage others to support as well. A later post on my blog here will give full details of the money raised.

Bong writes: "I was born and bred in the Philippines, and although I am miles away, it’s still my home. Seeing the sufferings of my fellow countrymen left by the super typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda breaks my heart and surely, yours too. Gawakoto prides itself in being Filipino all the way. In this time of need, we want to extend a helping hand to our fellow Pinoys."

The artwork
Bong Abad who owns and runs Gawakoto is a proud Filipino. Many of his designs are infused with the legend and culture of his heritage. He drew the jiu jitsu Kalabaw character applying a rear naked choke. The kalabaw is a water buffalo that is a national symbol of strength for Filipino people. I drew the demon character being choked out. Bong and I swapped art files by email back and forth until we could merge our two characters together as one. Matt Benyon, owner and chief designer of Scramble applied his deft touch with type and text. The whole piece took two long sleepless nights of work. We hope, as a design, it is something people will be proud to wear. To our knowledge, it is the first time three artists from the BJJ community have collaborated and merged our pen lines into one coherent piece.

We hope the islands of the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan can eventually piece their communities and lives back together again.
